(Tilted Page) Official Sparks Fly (Music Video)
"The song 'Sparks Fly' is about falling for someone that you maybe shouldn't fall for, but you can't stop yourself because there's such a connection, there's such chemistry."
— Taylor Swift (Speak Now Track-by-Track Commentary, 2010)

the narrative
The song doesn't try to explain itself. It drops straight into the feeling through rain, sparks, and desire that rises before there's any time to think. It sounds like it was written by someone who was actually there.
Taylor wrote this song at sixteen, but nothing about it sounds young. The feeling it describes is something everyone knows—the pull toward someone you probably shouldn't follow, and the inability to stop yourself anyway.

Sparks Fly became one of the loudest moments of the Speak Now World Tour because it gave everyone in the room permission to go back to their own version of that feeling. The window of time when everything seemed possible and nothing could slow you down.
lyrics

“You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter”
